The Lord’s Prayer – My Way

Just like the title suggests, I have paraphrased the Lord’s Prayer. It had lost most of its meaning to me, due to familiarity. So perhaps you can gather some inspiration from this, to spice up your own prayer-life. God knows mine could use some.

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Amen

Our Father in heaven,

Dear Abba, Your are our Father indeed. You created us in your wisdom and your love. You guide us through life and give us what we need.

Hallowed be Your name.

So let us remember and proclaim you and your name as the one who created us. Let us remember that your creation is Good, that you love it and everything in it. Let us remember and proclaim that you have all of us in your faithful hands.

Your kingdom come

In Jesus you have launched your kingdom and our future father. In your goodness you have given us abundant life. Help us to bring that abundant life to those around us, be they near or far, help us share your kingdom so that we may share in it.

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Work through us so that your plan comes to life here on earth, just like it did all those years ago in Eden. Father, bring back Eden, where your world and our world fully overlap Lord. Invade this space; work through us, to bring all of us to Eden, to New Jerusalem. And help us remain faithful along the way.

Give us today our daily bread.

Lord, Father, you provide for us all that we could ever need. Let us graciously accept these things as the gifts that they are, Father. Like the Manna you provided in the wilderness. Let us receive and not take for granted all that you do for us.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

For in your amazing grace you have forgiven us everything. You have taken all of our faults and our selfishness, our laziness and our will fullness, all our flaws and our sins and you have carried them to Calvary. You have covered for them and you have forgiven them, so that now we can forgive those who have wronged us, our neighbours, our friends and even our enemies, as you have forgiven them already.

And do not lead us into temptation,

And Father, when this road you have put us on, gets tough, when following you is hard, when forgiving seems impossible and when doing good does not seem to make a difference, let us not be tempted sway or steer off course. Let us not be tempted to give up. Father, help us stay on track and let us not be tested and distracted by shiny, empty, promises or tricks.

but deliver us from the evil one.

But Father, when they do show up, help us to reist these tricks and distractions. Deliver us from temptation, from the one who wants to lead us astray. Deliver us from the one who wants us to think about smaller selfish things. Deliver us from the one who rules this world, and instead guide us onto the path that leads to Your Kingdom.

Amen

Father, let it be so.
